2018 Retrospective in Anime

Yep, people will start shit about this not being on time. However if the Oscars can get away with hosting their awards in late February by the time people have forgotten what movies came out last year so can I god dammit. Anywho, I know I have not listed everything that came out since I have not watched every show. Hell even the ones that I’ve planned to watch didn’t end up getting watched due to various reasons. But here they are in short, hot take fashion:

Aggressive Retsuko

Fuck off to Netflix for keeping away good shit for themselves. Nevertheless if this series turns into those 1000+ episode anime like Doraemon, I would watch every episode twice. I need a Retsuko plushie!

A-

Alice or Alice: Siscon Niisan to Futago no Imouto

How can y’all hate on pure sisterly-brotherly love~? These lolis are just too adorable to hate! Short time frame was good enough for it to be a passable watch.

C+

Asobi Asobase

Best anime comedy to come out in god knows how long. It doesn’t break any new ground, but that shouldn’t hamper on the impact of its comedic timing and hilarious characters.

A-

Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card-hen

Sure it does not achieve the same childhood spirit of the original. But then again, it was inevitable that this wasn’t going to be as groundbreaking. All it can really rely on is nostalgia. Compared to the original, the plot in this was not as refreshing or memorable in hindsight. Nevertheless, it was a nostalgia trip that I was enjoying through most of the journey.

A-

Citrus

I know we are going through a yuri romance kick in recent years. But can we just please have a yuri renaissance in hentai please? I’d rather enjoy that than see anitwitter post cringe memes about abortive shows like this.

D-

Comic Girls

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit’s another slice of life cute girl highschool comedy. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut it did its job pretty well.

B

Darling in the FranXX

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show that dropped down in quality SO FAST quite like this. The only one I can think of is Sword Art Online but that was at least a slow burn half way through. However with this, the drop in quality happened in the last 1/3rd of the show that was so horrendously awful that the whole entire show crumbles under its own lack of cohesion and concise storytelling. I still think the first half is pretty strong enough to make it not terrible, just plain bad and a big failed opportunity to make it something more than just Trigger trying to make the next Evangelion.

C-

Devilman: Crybaby

Yuasa-san, please stop. I’m all for experimenting but this was just an absolute mess. But it is at least an admirable mess to gander at.

C-

Goblin Slayer

I know people were absolutely horrified by the rape scene that only last for like….10 seconds. If anything, I would’ve preferred more rape. At least that would’ve made this less boring and milquetoast.

C-

Golden Kamuy

An intriguing setting with a decent cast of characters. I was not really grabbed by the plot that much…..that’s pretty much all I got for this.

B

Grand Blue

This is what we need: A seinen comedy anime that appeals to both sex demographics! Plus we need more slice of life involving college aged characters. Japan stop making college a miserable experience for people already!

B+

Harukana Receive

I mean hey, at least this will cure my itch for a Keijo!!!!!!! sequel that we will never get. But since this bombed, now we will need another one that will replace the throne.

C+

Hataraku Saibou

Cute and educational! Along with Asobi, this was another comedy that topped this year.

B+

High School DxD Hero

Oh jeez, where to start? I actually did not mind the animation and art style. I even liked the way Issei and Rias’s relationship grew in this season. But this season was seriously lacking the fanservice that made this show fun to watch. The story, while not bad by any means, was not why we watch this anime for. Hell the story in the first half felt like it was completely forgotten about by the 2nd half. However, I still think this was a decent entry to the series. I just wish it had a bit more meat to it.

C+

Hinamatsuri

Honestly, I can’t remember much about this comedy but apparently I liked it enough to find it funny. *shrug*

B-

Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara

Finally Kaori Ishikara gets her big break! Granted, I wish it was in a better anime but this was a decent enough one for her.

C+

Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu

Now here are some cuties that any thirsty man would lewd over. Love the art and colors in this show and the protagonist is an absolute riot.

B

Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san

The big forehead girl animu. I want to give that head a big smooch!

B-

Megalo Box

I’m honestly not a boxing guy, so maybe that’s why this one didn’t really grab me as much.

C+

Mitsuboshi Colors

That RPG scene was probably the funniest scene of the entire year alone.

B

Poputepipikku

The memes speak for themselves.

B-

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai

I was honestly surprised by this. Sure it does get a little self-indulgent with its own supernatural logic, but when you get pass that it proves to be a nice character study with effecting drama. I certainly prefer this over Bakemonogatari; come at me fanboys.

A-

Senran Kagura Shinovi Master: Tokyo Youma-hen

I almost dropped the show from the piss poor animation in the beginning. It does improve a little later on thankfully. Still, it’s about as what you would expect from Senran Kagura.

B-

Slow Start

Run of the mill by definition.

C+

Sora yori mo Tooi Basho

A drive for adventure that speaks to the traveler in me!

B

SSSS.Gridman

I only came for the thicc thighs. And that’s kind of what this whole thing has going for it. Sorry, just can’t get over the attempt of trying to be more than an average mecha show.

C+

Steins;Gate 0

A nice trip down memory lane. It has a rough start admittedly, but I think it does pick up in quality half way through.

A-

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

This was actually more fun to watch than previous entries. Still can’t get over how boring everything else is around it.

C-

Tada-kun wa Koi wo Shinai

*sleeps an eternal slumber*

C+

Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru!

Russian lolis need to be a thing. Sure if this were to have a male protag people would probably bash this to pieces, but I thought the way they handled it was innocent enough in a silly way.

B-

Violet Evergarden

God damn, why can’t Kyoto Animation make an anime that has beautiful animation and art while having a plot and characters that aren’t complete snooze fests?

C

Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii

A simple and funny comedy for the ladies out there. Speaks to all the female otakus out there to keep on keepin on!

B

Yama no Susume: Third Season

Lolis climbing mountains. What more is there to say? We live in a post-Yuru Camp world now so I guess the bar has been raised since then.

B

Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san

The pantie shots are what make this anime worth watching alone.

B-

Yuru Camp△

So homely and comfy. Like sitting next to a fireplace with a hot cocoa while listening to old Jazz music.

B+

Zombieland Saga

I’m now a necrophiliac.
