Highschool DxD New Review

With the onslaught of ecchi titles that have come out this past year or so, there haven’t been many of them with the distinct charm or courage as some great ones. They are all devoid of any pleasure or wit in how any anime can portray fan service as colorful and sometimes ascetically beautiful in its artistry and dialogue. However, with that said, there are occasionally great gems hidden in the genre that does provide great comedy and memorable characters. Enter High School DxD.

The World God Only Knows: Goddess Arc Review

It has been a remarkable ride following this series for so long, and looking back at how The World God Only Knows has impacted the anime community, it’s not far off to say that it changed harem anime as we know it. It shows that you don’t need to show girls in suggestive situations all the time to provoke entertainment or emotion into your harem. Sometimes all you need is genuine emotion and intelligent comedic writing to create a meaningful love story. Or, in this case, multiple love stories.

Gunslinger Girl Review

Whether disturbing or not, any subject matter should not be shied away from being written into a story narrative because it’s too dark for the mainstream audience to handle. Science Fiction has come a long way from stories involving the unknown reaches of space by the works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells to stories that draw social implications of our society from famed authors George Orwell and Phillip K. Dick. There is little doubt that anime productions have tackled a lot beneath the limits of the genre ranging from Space Opera to Cyberpunk. One series that is often considered one of the most popular in the anime Sci-fi genre is Ghost in the Shell. After the movie’s success, directed by celebrated director Mamoru Oshii, we now have Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, but this time without Mamoru Oshii involved with the production. Considering how well Oshii directed Ghost in the Shell, people were skeptical about whether Stand Alone Complex could get the best out of the movie in quality storytelling and animation. Long story short, it did almost every aspect correctly. Continue reading

Black Lagoon Review

With a genre that deals with many action set-pieces, a show of this specific genre is usually bogged down into mindless entertainment territory with absolutely no substance to it at all. There have been in the past many action films and TV shows that have shown to become competent in the history of film-making, examples in mind are the works of John Woo, Michael Mann, and Quentin Tarantino. But what if I told you that there is an anime show that encompasses everything that is great about those three directors and succeeds on every possible level? The show in question is Black Lagoon, a show that showcases a blend of mindless Hollywood action and juvenile humor in the best possible sense of the word juvenile. Continue reading
